Afro-Brazillian Dance and Drumming Workshops
As part of 'Kidstock', we are offering morning & afternoon Afro-Brazilian dance & drumming workshops for the children. These workshops must be pre-booked as places are limited. Each session will last 45 minutes & children can then pop upstairs to the main festival & take part in the drop in workshops.
Teacher Biographies
Rosaria immersed herself in dance from a very early age, studying flamenco, salsa, African, Eygptian & contemporary dance styles. She has extensive experience as both a dance teacher & choreographer for groups of all ages & currently delivers more than 200 movement workshops annually in schools & dance groups around the UK. Her career highlights include performances at the Notting Hill Carnival & the Coburg International Samba Festival, Germany. She is further a regular performer with Brighton’s own Carnival Collective.
Theah is a dance artist who's performance highlights include 'Glastonbury Festival', 'Notting Hill Carnival' and 'Sadler's Wells - Brazilian Extravaganza'. Currently running her self-devised project using Afro-Brazilian Dance as a tool for identity, she is enthusiastic to promote the value of education, expression and enjoyment through dance & movement.
Alex has had a keen interest in percussion since 1989 when he brought his first pair of bongos, since then he has been playing and collecting percussion instruments from all over the world. He has played with a wide variety of groups including The Mad Hatters, The Harry Monk All Stars, Sonido Latino & Barulho. He leads samba workshops with various schools in the southeast and has an ongoing project with Uckfield community college leading” Spiritus jam “an Afro-Brazilian influenced after school drumming group.
Dance Workshops
• Warm up. Gentle movement, games and ice break exercises
• Explanation of the objectives of the workshop
• Show and teaching of movement, explaining the background as well
as teaching songs if apply. Choreography inspired by Afro-Brazilian tradition
and carnival dance
• Personal exploration of movement (either in groups/couples/individually).
Chance to develop one's own choreography
• Wrap up and warm down
Drumming Workshops
• 10 to 15min explanation of the instruments and there roles in the group,
followed by a demonstration of some of the classic phrases and rhythms
of samba and samba reggae. This is then rounded off with a brief history
of the link between Africa, Brazil and rhythm.
• 10-15 mins clapping and stepping warm up to get the coordination going.
Students learn some call and response rhythms.
•20-25 mins learning the main groove on the drums and a call and response
intro before the dancers come and join the drummers .
There will be a final rehearsal from 3.15- 3.45 for those children from both the morning & afternoon dance & drumming workshops who wish to take part in the end of day performance. This will take place in the basement room at the Komedia. Please speak with your tutors before leaving if you would like to take part in this performance.
All children will need trainers, PE kit & loose clothing (comfy T-shirts, tracksuits, vest tops & shorts). As the workshops progress, they will need to peel off/put on layers as their bodies warm up & warm down. No jewellery should be worn & hair will need to be tied back.
